San Diego Surf Forecast 🌡️

Week of August 17th

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Sunday Stoke! Where we have good vibes at all tides 🌚

Swell Summary 🌊 New SSW swell builds through the week, starting modest Sunday and gradually filling in with waist- to chest-high surf at most spots, while far North County standouts hit shoulder- to head-high by midweek. Clean morning windows and favorable tide pushes highlight the best sessions, though afternoon onshores and 6’+ evening highs may limit quality later in the day. Reinforcing pulses keep surf in the fun zone into the weekend, favoring reefs, piers, and jetties for the best shape.

North County Report 🌊

Report powered by Surfline Premium. Spot Check: Swamis

Best Bet ✅ Wednesday morning (Aug 20)—SSW swell tops out with shoulder- to head-high sets in North County, clean winds, and a favorable tide push.

Worst Bet ❌ Monday afternoon (Aug 18)—inconsistent surf with afternoon onshore bump makes for one of the weakest windows of the week.

South County Report 🌊

Report powered by Surfline Premium. Spot Check: Blacks

Best Bet ✅ Target reefs or breaks with structure. The reefs of La Jolla are likely a good bet.

Worst Bet ❌ Again, not really a bad day but afternoons early week have less desirable winds than mid-week.

When San Diego’s summer water warms up, skip the full suit — Driftline’s wetsuit-lined boardshorts give you just the right amount of warmth. Perfect for long sessions when all you need is a little extra comfort between sets.

Wave Recommendations 🎯

  1. Trestles OVERALL

  2. Oceanside Harbor NORTH COUNTY

  3. Windansea SOUTH COUNTY

Tides & Sunrise/Sunset 🌅

The early morning rising high tide should be perfect for dawn patrol but might be a bit swampy/filled out by mid-morning peak high. Another tide push at sunset too.

Wind Radar 🌬️

Light (mornings) to modest winds all week with even the afternoon window looking fine most days.

What’s Happening at the Beach?! 🏖️

Did you Know? 🌎️

In San Diego, boogie boarding and surfing share the same waves, but boogie boarders get the inside scoop — literally — since they can ride steeper, shore-pounding waves that surfers usually avoid. Here’s a few places you’ll see both crews shredding side-by-side almost year-round.
